Winchester Mystery House - A Haunted Mansion?
Legend says that the widowed Sarah Winchester received word from a medium that countless spirits were seeking vengeance due to the numbers of lives lost from Winchester rifles. She was told to relocate from New Haven and build a home that would never be completed. If construction ended, so too, would her life. Ms. Winchester settled in the Santa Clara Valley and immediately commissioned work to begin on her new estate, Llanda Villa. The contractors followed no formal blueprints, just Ms. Winchester’s orders and her ideas sketched on paper or tablecloths.
Winchester Mystery House - Peculiar Architecture Attracts Visitors. For nearly 40 years, construction crews built and rebuilt countless rooms. It is believed that Ms. Winchester was attempting to confuse the spirits by creating mazes throughout the house, installing doors that opened to walls, and building staircases that led to nowhere. She was also partial to the number 13 to ward off evil spirits. Many staircases have 13 steps, chandeliers have 13 candles, and windows have 13 panes.
Prior to the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, the house stood seven stories high. Today, the Winchester Mystery House is four stories. At the time of Ms. Winchester’s death in 1922, the house had 160 rooms including 40 bedrooms, five or six kitchens, two ballrooms, and two basements. [Top]
